Usui Reiki
The Usui Reiki system of natural healing is a Japanese healing art. The Japanese word ‘Reiki’ can be translated as “Rei”, meaning ‘universal life energy’ and “Ki”, which means ‘vital life force energy that flows through all living things’. The Usui system is a way of working with Reiki for healing of oneself and others. The word healing is used in the sense of regaining harmony and wholeness, newness, and abundance. It is the laying on of hands and allowing the Reiki energy to flow and transform. If one’s ‘universal life energy’ is low, then we are more likely to become ill or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy with a robust immune system.
Reiki treats the whole person including the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. It can induce:
- Relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and wellbeing.
- Reduces pain and tension.
- Stress relief.
- Relieves anxiety and distress.
- Improves symptoms of fatigue and insomnia.
- Treats depression.
- Boosts mood by releasing pleasure endorphins.
- Enhances a feeling of radiance and wellbeing.
Hands are placed on the client’s body in certain hand positions, mainly over the main energy centres of the body depending on where the practitioner is intuitively guided. I sometimes use crystals, colour swabs, bells, chimes, and drums to add to the session.
THE HISTORY OF USUI REIKI
The founder Mikao Usui or Usui Sensii was born in 1865 in Japan. He was a very bright student and learnt many languages. He was brought up in a Tendai Buddhist family. As an adult he lived in Kyoto with his wife and two children. He was a businessman and had varying degrees of success. He always had strong determination and a positive outlook, which helped him to overcome obstacles. He spent a lot of his time meditating at the holy mountain, Kurama Yama, north of Kyoto where he was part of a Tendai Buddhist group.
It was during 1888 that Usui contracted cholera as an epidemic swept through Kyoto. He had a profound near-death experience in which he received visions of Mahavairochana Buddha and received direct instructions from him. After this, he had a major reassessment of his life. He developed a keen interest in the esoteric science of healing as taught by Buddha, and he developed the compassionate wish that he might learn these methods in order to benefit mankind. When he recovered and discussed his wishes and his experience with his family; they were outraged and treated him as an outcast for his claims of seeing enlightened deities and he was beaten by the Priest and chased out of the family temple. Eventually Usui met a holy man, who recognised Usui’s tremendous spiritual potential and took him on as a student. Usui became a devout Shingon Buddhist, and his family removed him from the family ancestry, regarding him as a traitor. To this day, relatives refuse to talk about him, saying it is against the will of his ancestors to speak his name. Even his daughter wrote a clause in her Will to the effect that her father’s name should never be spoken in her home. And yet this man has brought so much healing and goodness into this world. He collected many Buddhist manuscripts on the art of healing, particularly from Tibet, including the ‘Tantra of the Lightning Flash’ which was the secret transmission for healing all illnesses of the body, speech, and mind. The Tantra provided all the information that he had been looking for.
Through the research, study, and years of practice, Usui was able to perceive a method for bringing the essence of these Buddhist practices to the masses. Usui called this healing method ‘Rei Ki’.
Mikao Usui was truly a man ahead of his time. He went against the social norms of his day, which were very sectarian, and class orientated. Usui believed that everyone should have access to the Buddhist healing methods, regardless of religious beliefs. He wanted to find a way to offer these powerful healing techniques to the common man, with no need for long, arduous practice. Out of his great compassion and determination, he vowed that he would some day find a way to develop a healing that would cure every type of disease and could be taught to anyone, regardless of background, education, or religious beliefs, which he did through sheer will, luck, spiritual guidance, and determination.

Reiki Drumming
Reiki drumming is a specialised method of Reiki healing which makes use of sound waves from a shamanic drum to introduce Reiki energy more deeply into a person’s energy field to aid deep relaxation and stress release. It can help to remove deeply ingrained energy blockages. Drumming reminds the body of its ideal vibratory rate, which is in harmony with the Earth and the natural rhythms of the Universe. From my own family experience of using the Reiki drumming technique; my mother had suffered for years with painful ear problems and after one session her ears have caused her no more issues.
EACH SESSION WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR. THE CLIENT IS FULLY CLOTHED THROUGHOUT. SESSIONS CAN BE SENT DISTANTLY AT A MUTUALLY AGREED TIME.
