Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a multifaceted healing art which uses the essential oils of aromatic plants,  flowers and trees to promote health of the body, vitality and serenity of the mind. The roots  of this beautiful therapy are ancient and are based on more than 6000 years of knowledge. The term ‘Aromatherapy’ has only been used within the last 100 years. Aromatherapy is a  holistic approach to good health which aims to treat the whole person; mind, body and soul.

The oils can be used in many forms: massage, inhalations, aromatic baths, compresses, skin  care, salt rubs and pulse point rollers.

Due to the extreme concentration of the essential oils, they are mixed with vegetable carrier  oils at the correct dilution for each individual client.

The main routes by which essential oils are absorbed by the body:

THE LUNGS – during inhalations and massage the vapours are inhaled. The lungs are lined  with a rich blood supply which readily absorbs the essential oil molecules. This is the fastest  way for the oils to be absorbed. As the molecules are inhaled through the nose or mouth, a  message is sent to the central nervous system via the limbic system (our primitive brain) which is the seat of our moods, memories, and emotions. These molecules then travel  around the body for several hours doing their work, before they are eliminated.

THE SKIN – during massage or when the oils are applied topically, the diluted blend of  essential oils are absorbed into the blood stream through the pores, follicles and sweat  glands of the skin. A uniform absorption takes place during a full body massage as the  essences circulate into the interstitial fluid between each cell. This is the best method for  skin care; soothing sore muscles, increasing circulation, eliminating toxins and many other uses.

DEPENDING ON WHAT THE CLIENT NEEDS the oils have various benefits:

  • Stimulate the circulation, increasing the rate of elimination of toxic substances such  as uric acid.
  • Can assist with focus, productivity, and clarity.
  • Works on specific organs, increasing the secretions of body chemicals such as  production of bile by the liver, or oestrogen by the ovaries.
  • Most oils are highly antiseptic and very effective in treating bacterial issues and  infections.
  • Many oils are analgesic; so, relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Some oils are mood enhancing and stimulate the release of endorphins so aiding with depression, anxiety, and stress related illnesses.
  • The oils can stimulate specific neurochemicals within the nervous system.
  • Oils which are sedatives can induce sleep as they stimulate the neurochemical  serotonin.
  • The oils can rebalance the system and restore homeostasis.
  • It helps activate the body’s own innate self-healing abilities.
  • Aromatherapy compliments a healthy diet and lifestyle.
  • It complements and should be used alongside the client’s current conventional  medical treatments.
  • Specific oils and blends of oils can support skin care and help rebalance sebum production.
  • Oils can heal skin problems such as athlete’s foot, cold sores, ringworm, and scabies.
  • Some oils alleviate cold and flu symptoms.
  • Oils act as a preventative and a tonic to good overall health.
  • Natural as nature intended.
  • Some oils smell amazing and are great as a natural perfume blend.

Most essential oils have a therapeutic affinity with particular organs or body systems. For  instance, essential oil of rose has a purifying, regulating and tonic effect on the uterus. Once  absorbed by the body, the particles of rose will travel to the uterus and have a beneficial  effect upon it. It can be particularly beneficial for a woman having problems conceiving.

It is an art mixing the various oils with their carrier oils in the correct and most beneficial proportions for each client. Most mixtures have a top, middle and base note to create a  blend which complements each other. Although some blends are just for their therapeutic  benefits, they still ideally need to give a balanced aroma. Also, allergies and intolerances  must be taken into account with each client. A detailed consultation needs to be carried out  before treatment.

It is so important that the practitioner knows what they are doing as some oils can be toxic  in large doses and sometimes a little research needs to be done before a blend is put  together.

Aromatherapy needs to be used carefully in the home around pets, especially cats so it’s not  as easy or as simple as buying a bottle of essential oil and hoping for the best. There are  many amazing health benefits, but you also need the right oils for you and your lifestyle.
